The image is disconcerting. It's hard to see what other woman this could be than Dido. But nowhere does Didon hold a quill and a book in Book 2, or indeed anywhere else in the Eneid. Perhaps there's a contamination here with Ovid's Héroïdes? In the 7th epistle, Dido writes to Aeneas...
