Description
The story's narrator is traveling in Germany with his servant when, as he passes a cemetery, he spots a man leaning over a funeral monument. The man is Count Liebman, who has come to mourn the death of his lover, whom he was about to marry. Moved by the Count's melancholy, the narrator approaches the Count in the rest of the short story and invites him to tell him his story.
