Ermance, cul-de-lampe (Baculard d'Arnaud, The Trials of Emotion vol4) - Halbou after Marillier

Description

This cul-de-lampe offers an allegorical reading of the denouement of the short story Ermance. In it, a woman pushes away the torch that a putto holds out to her, pointing to a celestial light. This gesture may reflect Ermance's refusal to remarry, and her determination to become a nun even though there is no obstacle preventing her from marrying the man she has always loved.
