D'Almanzi (Baculard d'Arnaud, The Trials of Emotion vol4) - Halbou after Marillier

Description

During a battle, the Count of Ossemont finds himself in a very bad position: despite commanding the army, he is knocked down in a gap. An enemy soldier was about to shoot him at point-blank range when one of his men, d'Almanzi, stepped in, diverted the opponent's pistol and shot him dead. He then carries his commander's body to safety.

The engraving illustrates this scene: d'Almanzi, standing heroically in the breach, grabs his opponent's weapon while brandishing his sword, while the Count lies helpless on the ground. Later, the reader discovers that d'Almanzi is in fact the Count's hidden son, whom the Count had never met, giving this scene an even stronger symbolic dimension.
