D'Almanzi, vignette (Baculard d'Arnaud, The Trials of Emotion vol4) - Halbou after Marillier

Description

The Count of Ossemont has dishonored Clémence, the granddaughter of the Chevalier de Kersan. Eager to make amends, he had wanted to marry her, but her father had objected, imposing a more advantageous match.

Many years later, racked by remorse and with no news of Clémence, the Count meets and befriends a young man, d'Almanzi. He is astonished to discover that Almanzi is his own son, born of his past union with Clémence. Married, however, he can neither legitimize the child nor repair the injustice committed. The situation only unravels when his wife dies: now free, he can finally marry Clémence and recognize his son.

The vignette depicts precisely this moment. The Count, kneeling before Clémence, announces that he can at last marry her, while d'Almanzi stands behind her, witnessing the long-awaited reparation.
