Description
Lord Dorset, an English nobleman, sees his daughter Hélène fall in love with a young page named Makin. Opposed to this union, he causes the two lovers to flee, attempting to reach France. A violent storm catches them at sea and, after a while, they are stranded on an uncharted island, the future Madeira. They begin a life of self-sufficiency that spans many years, punctuated by the birth of their children and by Hélène's regrets, still haunted by the idea of having abandoned her parents.
One day, another storm hits the island and a ship comes aground on the coast. Makin and Hélène rush to rescue the shipwrecked and discover, stunned, Hélène's parents among them.
The engraving illustrates this moment: Makin supports Hélène's mother, while Hélène helps her weakened father. It's a scene of miraculous recognition between the parents and their daughter, whom they thought lost forever, and whom they forgive for fleeing. In front of this group, as well as in the background, other castaways are visible, thanking nature for sparing them.
