Raphael returns unto Heaven (Milton's Paradise Lost, 1866) - Gustave Doré

Description

So parted they: the Angel up to heaven
From the thick shade, and Adam to his bower. (Book VIII, 652-653)

The archangel Raphael told Adam and Eve about the Fall of the rebel angels and the Creation. He also warned them of the imminent danger: Satan was about to tempt them, not by force but by cunning. Adam and Eve have free will, and will be fully responsible for their disobedience if they give in. His mission accomplished, Raphael returns to the heavens.
