Satan before the Abyss of the Tigris (Milton's Paradise Lost, 1866) - Gustave Doré

Description

In with the river sunk, and with it rose,
Satan. (Book IX, 74-75)

Satan wanders for seven nights around the Garden of Eden, seeking to deceive the vigilance of its guardians. On the eighth night, he finds himself on the opposite side of the main entrance and discovers an unexpected path. It's an abyss into which the Tigris, one of the four rivers that irrigate Eden, plunges. Satan plans to plunge into it, hoping to follow the course of the river to the place where the Tigris gushes forth as a fountain, near the Tree of Life.
