O Earth, how like to Heaven, if not preferred
More justly. (Book IX, 99-100)

Satan has once again succeeded in deceiving the vigilance of the guardians of Eden and approaching Adam and Eve. Before temptation sets in, he laments his downfall and envies the happiness of his victims, living in an earthly paradise reflecting the image of heaven, whose accesses are closed to him for eternity.
