Description

The mosaic consists of two scenes.

Context: Jacob has robbed Esau of his birthright, and fears his wrath. In Laban's service, he has grown rich. When he leaves Laban and approaches the land of Seir, where his brother lives, he sends emissaries on an embassy. It is this embassy that is represented here.

Top scene: On the left two emissaries of Jacob, dressed in simple shepherds' tunics appear before Esau and his men in arms at the gate of their fortified city. On the right, the same two emissaries report to Jacob and his two wives Leah and Rachel what they have seen.

Bottom scene: the mosaic is badly damaged. All that remains on the left is a group of armed soldiers and on the right a shepherd with his staff. These are presumably Esau's soldiers on one side and Jacob's shepherds on the other. In the center was probably Esau taking Jacob in his arms to seal the reconciliation. (Gn 33, 3-5)

History :
