Description
Henri IV, converted to Catholicism, triumphantly entered Paris on March 22, 1594. Rubens treats the scene in the manner of a Roman imperial triumph. The arch is inspired by the Arch of Titus, and the whole is based on the chariot of Caesar imagined by Mantegna.
History :
2. The painting is not strictly speaking part of the Cycle de la vie de Marie de Médicis, but of a cycle project centered on Henri IV. This canvas, like its counterpart, Henri IV à la bataille d'Ivry, was purchased in 1686 by Grand Duke Como III and placed in the Pitti Palace before entering the Uffizi in 1773.
