Kalasrade in the Seraglio of Amurath (The Tales of the Genii, 1764) - Walker

Sadak and Kalasrade. Tale the eighth. (p. 93)

Sadak après avoir conquis la gloire au combat s’est retiré avec son épouse Kalasrade et leurs enfants. sur les rives du Bosphore. Un jour qu’il est à la chasse avec ses fils, son palais est incendié. Sadak revient en hâte, Kalasrade a disparu. Sadak va se jeter aux pieds du sultan Amurath pour lui demander du secours.
Mais c’est Amurath lui-même qui, jaloux du bonheur de Sadak, a fait enlever Kalasrade et l’a amenée à son sérail où, à la première vue, il tombe follement amoureux d’elle. Kalasrade s’évanouit, il la fait porter dans les plus riches appartements du sérail et couvrir de bijoux, tandis qu’il se poste dans un appartement voisin pour l’épier. “ … j’irai dans l’appartement voisin, d’où je pourrai contempler, sans être vu, la joie qui naîtra dans son cœur, lorsque ses yeux verront la magnificence qui l’environne.” (CDF p. 140) Mais Kalasrade, loin de se réjouir, comprenant le sort qui l’attend, cherche à se défigurer.
La scène ici illustrée est la scène où Kalasrade se réveillant de son évanouissement, arrache ses perles et porte les mains contre son visage, alors que les femmes esclaves se prosternent à ses pieds et que les eunuques, en retrait, n’osent lever les yeux. Il faut imaginer qu’Amurath dissimulé derrière observe la scène.

« She then in frantick Haste, tore off the magnificent Bracelets of Diamonds, which, during the Fainting, had been fastened to her Arms, and the rich Girdle of Rubies which adorned her Waist ; the Pearls and the Emeralds which were hung upon her Bosom ; and looking on herself, “If I have any Thing, said she, that attempt the Lawless to injure Sadak’s Love, thus will I sacrifice it to our mutual Truth !”
As she spake theses Words, she fastened her delicate Hands on her Cheeks, and before the Eunuch (who instantly ran toward her to prevent her Intentions) could seize her, she had marked her Features with Streams of Blood.
The disappointed Amurath could no longer contain himself, but he entered the Apartment just as the Blood was starting from the lovely Cheeks pf the Wife of Sadak. »
