Description
In the foreground, Ruggiero and his hippogriff are resting near a spring. The hippogriff is tied to a myrtle tree, which turns out to be Astolfo, whom Alcina transformed after growing tired of him.
In the background, a band of monsters advances to block the Path of Virtue, which Ruggiero had taken on Astolfo's advice.
In the far right, the city of Alcina.
The moment depicted is when Ruggiero, who is relaxing by the river, suddenly hears the myrtle tree speak, wounded by the hippogriff as it thrashes about. The artist has depicted symmetrically the beast’s movement as it struggles to free itself from its harness, and that of Astolfo as he turns at the sound.
